Wins land when 5 or more matching symbols connect, then tumble

The default build ships at 96.52% RTP on a 6x6 grid with no paylines at all. A win forms the moment five or more identical symbols sit next to each other, side by side or stacked, in one connected blob. There's no left-to-right rule and nothing to line up.

Once a cluster pays, those symbols vanish and the ones above drop into the gaps while fresh symbols fall in from the top. That's the tumble. Every drop can build another cluster, so a single paid spin can chain three, four, five wins before the reels finally settle with no new matches. Bigger clusters pay more than the minimum five, and the top symbols reward the fat 8-plus groups far more than the scraps.

We watched one tumble sequence in the free Gates of Hades demo chain four times off a single cup cluster, which is exactly how this game hides its volatility: dead air for stretches, then a burst.

The paytable rewards three high symbols and punishes the gems

Top of the ladder is the golden crown, worth roughly 150x the bet for a large cluster, with the ring around 120x and the cup or goblet near 60x. Below those sit the coloured gems, and they're the low pays here, not card royals. The base symbol wins are modest by design because the money lives in the multipliers, not the raw paytable.

Two specials do the heavy lifting.

Symbols that change the round

Flaming wild. Substitutes for any paying symbol and carries the multiplier value that feeds the meter above its column.
Hades flaming-head scatter. Three or more anywhere on the grid triggers free spins; six or more opens Super Free Spins.
Coloured gems. The low pays, four colours, cluster the same as any other symbol.

Treat the crown and ring magnitudes as approximate. Pragmatic Play publishes bands rather than a public symbol-by-symbol table, so we quote them as ballpark figures, not exact returns.

Each wild feeds a per-column meter that sums, then applies to any cluster touching that reel

Every flaming wild drops with a random multiplier: x1 to x100 in the base game, and up to x500 in free spins. That value doesn't just sit on the symbol. It gets collected into a meter above its own reel, and if two or three wilds land in the same column across the tumbles, their values add together into one running column total.

The sum is what pays.

Any winning cluster that touches a reel picks up that reel's accumulated multiplier, on every tumble. So a modest cluster spanning two loaded columns can suddenly carry a x40 and a x15 stacked on top of it. In the base game the meters wipe clean after each spin. In free spins they persist for the entire feature, and that persistence is the only route to the 10,000x ceiling.

In one 200-spin demo run our best base-game column stacked to x66 off two wilds, and the cluster touching it turned a $2 hit into a genuinely loud one. It cleared the next spin, as designed.

A single round, step by step

Here's exactly what happens between pressing spin and the reels going quiet, in the order it unfolds.

1. Set the bet

Pick a stake from $0.20 to $240. The bet is flat across all symbols since there are no lines to fund.

2. Spin the grid

Thirty-six symbols land across the 6x6 field. The game scans for any group of five or more connected matches.

3. Pay and remove

Every qualifying cluster pays out and its symbols are cleared from the grid at once.

4. Read the wild meters

Any wild in a paying position feeds its multiplier into the column meter above its reel. Values in the same column sum. Clusters touching that reel take the total.

5. Tumble

Remaining symbols drop, fresh ones fall in, and the scan repeats. This loops until a drop produces no new cluster.

6. Check scatters

Three or more Hades scatters on the finished grid trigger free spins. Six or more open Super Free Spins.

7. Clear or carry

Base game: the meters reset for the next spin. Inside the feature: they carry for the whole run.

Free spins start at three Hades scatters and scale with the count. The tiers are fixed, and six or more scatters doesn't just add spins, it changes the mode.

Retriggers add more spins by scatter count, roughly +5, +7, +10 or +12, and the column meters keep building the whole time. Super Free Spins is the strong version: every wild lands at a minimum of x10, which stacks the column sums far faster than the base feature.

One point of confusion worth killing off. There is no "Super Scatter" symbol in this game. Gates of Hades has a Super Free Spins mode, not a Super Scatter feature, that's a different Pragmatic Play title called Gates of Olympus Super Scatter.

You can also skip the wait. A 100x stake buys the regular free spins and a 500x stake buys Super Free Spins, which nudges the RTP a hair to around 96.50% and 96.47%. The buy button is stripped for UK accounts under the UK Gambling Commission feature-buy ban, so the game simply loads without it there.

The RTP you actually play depends on which model the operator loaded

Gates of Hades ships in three return models, and the operator picks one. That spread is the single biggest hidden variable in the game, because a full point of RTP is real money over a long session and it's set before you ever press spin.

How we tested it

We ran Gates of Hades in the free demo across several sessions of a few hundred spins each. We logged the cluster hits, timed how often clusters chained more than twice, tracked how the column meters built, and bought the feature at both the 100x and 500x tiers to watch the maths on each.

We didn't stake real money to write this.

The demo runs the default 96.52% model with the same tumble and multiplier logic as real play, so the mechanic behaviour is identical even though the credits aren't. Our biggest logged demo result came from a Super Free Spins buy where two columns each summed past x120, and our worst was a 500x buy that returned under 40x and stung. Both are noted honestly below.

Cons and watch-outs

The medium volatility is not a marketing line. Long dry spells are normal, and the reported free-spins trigger of roughly 1 in 270 spins means most sessions never see the feature that makes the game worth playing.

The RTP spread is a genuine trap. If your operator loaded the 94.47% model you're giving up two full points versus default, and nothing on the reels tells you unless you open the info panel.

The 500x Super Free Spins buy is the pointed anti-recommendation here. We don't recommend buying the 500x Super Spins unless you're on a bankroll that can absorb several buys returning under 1x, because a single flat feature at that price hurts and they do flat out. The base game pays thin between features, so on a small stake the game can feel like nothing is happening for long stretches. External aggregators landed lukewarm-positive for a reason, rating it between 6.7 and 7.4 out of 10. Strong presentation, familiar mechanic, rare big hits.
